What is Asphalt and Tarmac?
Asphalt and tarmac are often used interchangeably, but they are technically distinct materials, though both are used in road construction and paving.
Asphalt
Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates (such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone) and a binder called bitumen, which is a petroleum-based product. This mixture is heated and then applied to surfaces to create smooth, durable asphalt roads, asphalt driveways, and asphalt parking lots. Asphalt is known for its flexibility and ability to withstand varying weather conditions and heavy traffic.
Tarmac
Tarmac (short for tarmacadam) is a type of road surface made from crushed stone or aggregate mixed with tar. The process of binding the stone with tar to create a smooth, durable road surface. Tarmacadam was commonly used for paving Tarmac roads and Tarmac driveways due to its strength and ability to withstand traffic. While the use of pure tar has declined, the term “tarmac” is still commonly used, to refer to paved surfaces, particularly for tarmac roads, tarmac parking lots, and Tarmac driveways. Tarmac remains valued for its durability and the fact that it provides a solid, hard-wearing surface.
