Tar & Chip

A durable and cost-effective road or driveway surface

Opting for Tar & Chip is one of the most cost-effective and stylish solutions, which is why it’s so popular throughout Norfolk, especially in areas like Dereham, Fakenham, and North Norfolk. After preparing the surface, we apply a layer of hot liquid bitumen, delivered by our high-quality tar tankers. We then lay the stone chippings and use our specialised machines to roll them down, ensuring an exceptionally strong bond once the surface has set.

What is tar and chip?

Tar and chip (also known as surface dressing) is a paving method that involves applying a layer of hot liquid tar or bitumen onto a prepared surface, followed by a layer of aggregate (stone chips or gravel) which is then rolled into the tar. This process creates a durable and cost-effective road or driveway surface.

Here’s how it works:

  • Preparation: The surface is cleaned and prepped, often by removing debris, old materials, or unlevelled spots.
  • Application of Tar: Hot liquid tar or bitumen is sprayed onto the surface.
  • Chipping: Small stones or gravel chips are spread over the tar.
  • Rolling: A roller is used to press the stone chips into the tar, creating a solid bond and a smooth finish.

The result is a hard, durable surface that is highly functional, providing excellent grip and strength at a lower cost than alternatives like asphalt. It’s popular for driveways, roads, and rural or less trafficked areas, offering a rustic yet stylish appearance.
